In a world filled with noise, distraction, and misinformation, the most powerful form of Da’wah may not be loud debates or viral content - it’s the gentle reminder that Islam is not something foreign to the soul. It is something familiar.
This is the power of appealing to the fitrah - the pure, God-given nature that every human being is born with. When we speak to the fitrah, we’re not introducing something new. We’re awakening something that was always there.
What Is the Fitrah?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Every child is born upon the fitrah. Then his parents make him a Jew, Christian, or Magian.”
- Sahih Muslim (2658)
The fitrah is the innate inclination towards belief in one God - a natural sense of right and wrong, of seeking purpose, of yearning for the Divine. It’s the part of us that recognises truth when it is presented clearly and sincerely.
This concept is also grounded in the Qur’an:
“So direct your face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah upon which He has created [all] people. No change should there be in the creation of Allah.” - Surah Ar-Rum (30:30)
Why Appealing to the Fitrah Matters in Da’wah
Too often, Da’wah becomes overly intellectual, philosophical, or confrontational. But most people don’t come to Islam through arguments - they come because something deep inside them says, “This is the truth.”
When we appeal to the fitrah, we:
Speak to the heart before the mind
Remove barriers by emphasising what people already sense and feel
Make Islam feel like a return, not a conversion.
This is why many reverts prefer the term ‘revert’ over the term ‘convert’ and often say, “It felt like I was coming home.”
How to Speak to the Fitrah: 5 Practical Tips
1. Start with God, Not Rules - Focus on Allah’s Oneness, Mercy, and Wisdom. Many people have been turned off religion due to harshness, not theology.
2. Use Questions, Not Just Answers - Ask: “Have you ever felt that this life has to mean something more?” or “Do you believe we’re here by chance?” These stir the fitrah gently.
3. Share Personal Reflections - Stories connect heart to heart. Share how Islam gave you clarity, peace, and purpose. Let sincerity speak louder than statistics.
4. Highlight Universals - Talk about concepts everyone relates to: justice, accountability, mercy, family, purpose. These transcend cultural or religious backgrounds.
5. Be Calm, Not Combative - The fitrah responds best in safe, sincere spaces - not debates or pressure. Be gentle. Trust the process.
“It is out of Allah’s mercy that you ˹O Prophet˺ have been lenient with them. Had you been cruel or hard-hearted, they would have certainly abandoned you…” - Surah Ali-Imran (3:159)
Signs the Fitrah Is Awakening
In Da’wah conversations, you might notice:
A person suddenly goes quiet and reflective
They say, “I’ve never thought of it like that before”
They admit they’ve always believed in one God or they admit that it makes sense
They’re emotionally moved by Qur’anic verses or stories
These are signs that you’ve touched the fitrah. When that happens - don’t rush. Give space. Let them process.
Final Reflection
Appealing to the fitrah isn’t about emotional manipulation - it’s about uncovering what Allah has already placed in every human soul. It’s about speaking with sincerity, clarity, and mercy.
We’re not calling people to our culture or our team. We’re calling them back to the One who created them. And when we speak to the fitrah, hearts recognise that call.
“Indeed, those who were given knowledge before it - when it is recited to them - fall upon their faces in prostration, and they say, ‘Exalted is our Lord! Indeed, the promise of our Lord has been fulfilled.’”- Surah Al-Isra (17:107–108)
